Why Reiki Might be the Missing Piece to Your Wellness Journey

Reiki is a holistic Japanese energy healing system that can help you in your journey to wellness. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “universal life” and (Ki) which means “energy”. The basis of this holistic system is that energy flows through everyone and that this energy is what gives us life. If our energy flow is low, we are at a higher risk of becoming sick and stressed. If our energy flow is high, we have a greater opportunity to be happy and stay healthy. This energy at times can become stagnant or damaged where there has been emotional pain or physical injury. Reiki is an energy that works on the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual levels to remove these energy blocks and restore balance. It is used for relaxation, stress reduction, anxiety, and one's general well-being.


Would you like to feel this energy? Let’s give it a try. Take a few deep breaths to relax and centre yourself at this moment. Now begin rubbing your hands together until you feel the warmth in your palms, then slowly separate your hands about six inches. Do you feel anything? You may feel a tingling in your palms. Try gently pulsing your hands towards each other - do you feel something between your hands? Is it squishy? This is the energy that flows through all of us.


A Reiki practitioner is attuned to channel this energy into you by using hand placements to move any energy that is stuck. The Reiki energy has divine wisdom and will go to wherever the healing is needed most for the mind, body, soul and spirit. You can never receive too much or too little energy as the supply will be the right amount needed for healing at this time.



During a Reiki session you will remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. Reiki treatments can also be done while seated. The session can start with an intention you have for healing. Keep in mind, Reiki works on all levels - the mind, body, soul and spirit. The practitioner will use gentle touch or hands slightly above your body to help guide this energy in a way that promotes balance and healing. You could feel warmth, coolness or a tingling sensation or nothing at all.


Don't worry, any of these sensations are normal. A deep sense of relaxation can occur and you might even fall asleep. The best healing occurs when the body is in a state of total relaxation. Sessions can be 30 to 120 minutes in length.


Reiki healing takes place even after the treatment. Energy will be flowing into areas that have been blocked. You may feel flu-like symptoms or have a headache. Some people feel tired and others feel a sense of renewed energy, some feel nothing at all. Be assured, the healing energy is working and you will feel a sense of renewal in the days to come.


Overall, Reiki treatments provide deep relaxation which reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep and promotes a positive mental state which allows the mind and body to heal.
