Katarina Schmidt MSW, RSW

Hello there! I’m Kat, a social worker living here in Saskatoon on Treaty 6 land. I am of mixed ancestry including Indigenous (Saulteaux, Cree, and Nakoda), and European (Croatian, German, and others). I am originally born and raised in Regina on Treaty 4 land and belong to White Bear First Nations. My pronouns are she/her, and I am part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

As a social work counsellor my goal is to meet my client exactly where they are at, and I use an eclectic approach of various modalities to do so. I believe we are all complex beings that do not fit into boxes and therefore require an approach to counselling and healing that is just as complex and nuanced as we are! I strive to provide a safe, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and relational based space for you to show up as you are. I will walk alongside you to achieve your goals in personal growth, healing, and in developing a deeper understanding of yourself within your environment or life circumstances. I believe clients are the experts of their own lives and I am privileged to be a part of their life’s journey.

Approaches aligned with my practice include:

• Trauma-informed

• Anti-oppressive and anti-racist

• Harm reduction

• Attachment Theory

• Person Centered

• Poly-Vagal Theory

• Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

• Strengths Based

• Psychodynamic and Humanistic insights

• Person in Environment

I have experience working with adult individuals with the following concerns and identities:

• Grief and loss

• ADHD and Autism

• Indigenous and POC life experiences

• Trauma

• Gender and sexual identity

• Stress

• Relationship concerns

• Family of origin or family dynamic concerns

• Harm reduction (ex. addictions, self-harm)

• Anxiety

• Depression and/or suicidal ideation

• Bipolar disorder

• Body image and disordered eating (anti-diet approaches, health at every size)

• Existential concerns

• Life transitions

I am an approved counsellor with Victim Services.
