Melissa Hoiness BSW, RSW

I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is vital to progress and positive outcomes in therapy and that vulnerability and authenticity pave the way for healing.  Therefore, I strive to create a safe, judgement-free environment filled with compassion and empathy, where you feel heard, valued, understood, and accepted.  I work together with my clients to create priorities, goals, and treatment plans that are individualized to your specific needs because there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" approach.  You are the expert in your own life and my goal is to empower you to let your intuition lead the way to healing, change, and resolution.  I gravitate towards a holistic approach that focuses on the mind-body connection. Together, we will look at various aspects of your life to improve your overall mental health and wellness.  I have over 10 years experience as registered social worker in health care, which includes counselling for complex medical issues, advocacy, and navigating the health care system.  Although I work with people from all walks of life, I have a special passion and interest in supporting those who are struggling with infertility as well as providing support to caregivers and older adults.  I have experience working with the following:

  • Infertility & pregnancy loss

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD & Trauma

  • Suicidal ideation & self-harm

  • Life transitions

  • Caregiver stress/burnout & elder care

  • Stress related to complex medical issues or a new diagnosis

  • Interpersonal conflict

  • Grief, bereavement & loss

  • General life stressors

Some of the approaches or theoretical frameworks I may use during our sessions include attachment theory, cognitive behavioural therapy, compassionate inquiry, mindfulness, polyvagal informed therapy, trauma informed therapy, somatic therapy. and Accelerated Resolution Therapy.  I also believe that psychoeducation is an important part of therapy and I will provide you with tools and knowledge you can use outside of the therapy office.
